Study on the drying characteristics of small-diameter birch lumbers

Xiping Zhao · Materials Science and Technology · 2005

The small-diameter birch lumbers were dried with consecution-heat or intermittent-heating,the change of moisture content(MC),surface stress and shrinkage rates of the lumber with different heating methods were discussed. The result of research showed that: the drying rate of lumber fell obviously after the MC reaching about 15%;the MC grad along thickness wasn't symmetrical during drying, and it were weakened after the MC reaching about 20%;the shrinkage occurred to lumbers at very high MC point, and the shrinkage rates reduced when the MC of lumber reached about 15%.The CUBIC described significantly the relationship between the shrinkage rates and the MC(R~2=0.97).The shrinkage rates would replace the MC to make a parameter for control drying process.
