Layer-United Modeling and Performance Analysis of Hierarchical Cellular Network

Fu Li · Jisuanji fangzhen · 2007

Hierarchical Cellular Structures (HCS) have become a major requirement in 3G mobile systems. A new general bidirectional call-overflow scheme for a two-tier HCS, which allows calls to overflow between the macrocells and microcells and layer selection in hierarchical architecture based on the velocity of the mobile making the calls, is considered. In order to evaluate the performance of such hierarchical systems, a layer-united microcell (macrocell) model was developed, which was obtained by extending a general microcell (macrocell) model, a Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP) and adding an overflowing traffic model to the macrocell (microcell), a M/M/C/C queueing system. Theoretical analysis and numerical evaluation show that the analytical model is more reliable. The effect of the velocity threshold was analyzed by using the models.
