A new approach to characterize acoustic emission signals of a structural cracking in loading process based on the approximate entropy(ApEn)is presented, it is a statistical method that quantifies the regularity of a time series. Its conception and nature are introduced.Successful application is performed to analyze the simulated acoustic emission signals and the acoustic emission signals produced by the crack in a steel tube. The results show that ApEn has an obvious ability to quantify complexity of signals, thereby provides a new effective tool for acoustic emission signals processing.
