Binaural Masking in Two Channel Stereophonic Reproduction
Xie Zhi-wen · Audio Engineering · 2005
The binaural masking effect under stereophonic condition is mainly studied in this paper. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that, in the frequency range of 250 Hz~4 kHz, the signal to masker ratio(SMR) for the stereophonic condition, under which signal and masker is separated in the space of objective perception,is 3~6 dB lower than that under monophonic condition. Therefore the experiments provide an example to validate the hypothesis that the binaural masking effect is the result of the high level auditory system processing binaural sound signal, and it also hints that by using stereophonic, reproduction speech intelligibility can be improved in communication systems.
