Comparison of English and Chinese Ellipsis and Its Application

Ellipsis,as a common language phenomenon found in both English and Chinese,serves the function of achieving cohesion of a text,presenting more new information,beautifying prose and poems and facilitating everyday conversation.It can be classified into nominal,verbal and clausal ellipses.Subject ellipses and predicate ellipses can be found in both English and Chinese,but in concrete applications,not only similarities but also big differences exist between them.Generally speaking,there are fewer subject ellipses but more predicate ellipses in English than in Chinese.Finally,the correct usage of ellipsis is offered to senior students majoring in English by analyzing their compositions.
