Reducing power consumption and prolonging the networks lifetime are important targets of wireless sensor networks.Clustering provides an effective way for prolonging the lifetime of a wireless sensor network. If all cluster heads transmit data packets directly to the base station, the cluster heads further from the base station will die much more quickly than those closer to the base station. In this paper, based on the rectangular monitoring field,we propose an energy consumption balance model to maximize the lifetime of sensor networks, and a non-uniform node deployment algorithm for sensor networks. The width of the layer is decided by node energy consumption. Also, the number of nodes in every layer is determined.Simulation results show that non-uniform node deployment algorithm can effectively extend the lifetime of the sensor network.
