Spatio-temporal GIS is a synthesized and applied technique,which is based on temporal database,GIS,artificial intelligence and so on,and its research object is the spatio-temporal information of things and phenomena which follow the order of nature including naissance,growth,existence and death in the spatio-temporal world.Although the research of spatio-temporal GIS on the theory and practice is not very mature so far,it has been a inevitable trend of the future GIS's development.First of all,the paper introduces the significance of spatio-temporal GIS's research,basing on this,it has summarized and generalized the concept,development's history and actuality of spatio-temporal GIS,and then sets forth the difficulty and direction of the spatio-temporal GIS's research.
