A fast multiple reference search algorithm for motion estimation in H.264

Zhiming Cui · Journal of Circuits and Systems · 2007

In the new H.264/AVC video coding standard, motion estimation incurs a considerable increase in encoder complexity compared to previous standards.JVT adopts Fast Motion estimation(FME) algorithm to accelerate motion estimation, but it only searches best points in every reference. As the increased computation is in proportion to the number of searched reference frames,in this paper,a Fast Multiple Reference Search Algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm includes two steps: minimizes the search range of reference by multiple reference selection and reduces the useless search by early termination.Experimental results have showed that at least half time of motion estimation is cut down for the similar quality and bit-rate video sequences.
