Factors Affecting the Accessibility of Antecedents

This paper first presents the four factors discussed by Mira Ariel that affect the accessibility of antecedents: distance, saliency, competition and unity. With the analysis of the data collected in Chinese, this paper proposes some other factors that also affect the accessibility of antecedents. They involve position, including the syntactic positions of interfering referents and those of antecedents and anaphors as well, structural hierarchy and inanimacy.
