H.264 is a new generation video compression standard, but its good performance is obtained with high complexity. In this coding technique, motion estimation takes up most of the time,so the optimization of motion estimation is a key problem for the improvement of coding efficiency. With the theory of motion estimation, several algorithms of fast motion estimation are discussed and compared in this paper. On this basis, features and improvement methods of fast motion estimation in H.264 standard are discussed.Furthermore, the future research direction and optimiztion concepts are suggested.
