Design and Implementation of COSTE, a Software Testing Environment

A COBOL software testing environment, COSTE, is introduced in the paper, including its framework, main functions, and characteristics. The system utilizes some special software testing techniques such as weak variation, probe insertion and automatic producing of test data. It can make static analyzing and dynamic testing to COBOL programs, provides program characteristic information, abnormal information, dynamic testing results, and structural coverage information. To approach the requirement of structural coverage, it can also produce complementary test data automatically according to the rule and information of structural coverage. Users can maintain COBOL software more efficiently by the aid of COSTE.
