THE DESIGN OF A VECTOR FORTRAN LANGUAGE AND ITS COMPILER

Z Zhang, Kun Liu · Chinese Journal of Computers · 1981

A large-scale integrated circuit digital computer system is referred to in this paper. The hardware of the system consists of a vector processor (host computer) and a peripheral processor. Its software includes an operating system, a vector FORTRAN eompiler, an assembler, etc. Most of the software runs on the peripheral processor. This paper introduces the design of the vector FORTRAN language and its compiler. The language includes FORTRAN, ANSI X3.9—1978 (ISO 1539—1980) as a proper subset, with some extensions for vectors. System reliability and code optimization have been emphasized at the designing of the vector FORTRAN language. It is very important to check the nondeterminacy (dependency hazard) of programs on this type of computer, and this compiler is able to fulfill this task.
