The sleep mechanism of the representative S-MAC protocol is improved due to the energy-constrained issue in wireless sensor networks. In the new protocol, the sleep time of the nodes is adjusted according to the change of the detecting interval and forwarding interval to save the energy consumption in listening to an idle channel and the lifetime of the whole network is extended.Simulation results show that the new protocol runs well and the better energy efficiency is achieved in the case of the longer detecting interval and forwarding interval.
