Sparseness Analysis of Radar Echoes and its Application in Ship and Chaff Discrimination
Qiang Fu · Signal Processing · 2009
Chaff is a typical passive interference, which is commonly used when ship is under attack of anti-ship missile (ASM).Up to now, chaff is still the most effective passive interference in the defense of ASM.The paper gives a sparseness difference analysis of ship and chaff echoes in time-domain and frequency-domain,and the conclusion is:ship echo is sparse in time-domain,but dense in frequency-domain;chaff echo is dense in time-domain,but sparse in frequency-domain.In order to describe the echo's sparseness, the paper establishes some measure indexes for sparseness, after that the paper gives a selection criterion for the optimal binarization threshold, and the conclusion is that the optimal binarization threshold should be the middle value of the echo's amplitude sequence. Taking discriminating ships and chaff clouds as an example, the paper designs an algorithm to discriminate ships from chaff clouds based on sparseness, and the simulation results validate the correctness and validity of this algorithm.
