Tunnel debris flow is a new kind of geological hazard during tunnel construction. In this paper, the happening condition and general characteristics of tunnel debris flow are generalized according to many tunnel debris flow accidents which have happened in China. The authors think that tunnel debris flow is the result of sudden unstable failure of the comprehensive function of geological structure(e.g. fault), hydraulic water dashing rock gravitation and unjust tunneling method. The forming process being discovered, some technical measures for preventing tunnel debris flow are given.
