Simulation of Bubble Motion and Droplet with Level Set Method

Weisheng Guan · Journal of Earth Sciences and Environment · 2007

A 3-dimensional mathematical model and numerical algorithm for the incompressible gas-liquid two-phase flows with moving interface are presented based on the Level Set method combined with ICE(Implicit Continuous Fluid Eulerian) numerical scheme. The presented approach is then applied to four typical motion processes of bubble and droplet, including bubble formation from an orifice in air-water bubble column, the interaction of air bubble pairs rising freely in water, droplet interaction with water surface and an isothermal normal collision between droplet and particle. The simulated results show that the presented model and algorithm are able to capture the topology change of the interface such as coalescence and breakup of bubble and droplet correctly and conveniently, the Level Set method is a promising and efficient numerical technique for moving interface problems of gas-liquid two-phase flows.
