A memetic algorithm for solving the multidimensional knapsack problem

For the difficulty of finding the global optimal solutions for multidimensional knapsack problem,this paper proposed a memetic algorithm for solving the multidimensional knapsack problem. The memetic algorithm integrated a tabu local search method with a feedback mechanism,a crossover operator,a population updating method. The population updating method took both the solution quality and the diversity of the population into account and enhanced the diversity of the search. The proposed algorithm was tested by some benchmarks. The results show that the proposed algorithm can avoid trapping in local optimal solutions and performs better than existed algorithm in terms of average solution quality.
