A novel energy saving route maintenance scheme for ad hoc networks

Ou Dong · Journal of the China Railway Society · 2003

In ad hoc networks, much excellent work has been done on establishing route and its quality of service (QoS), but the energy issue in route maintenance has been greatly ignored. Due to movement of mobile hosts, the energy consumption rate of a route may change with time. In this paper, a distancebased route maintenance (DBRM) scheme for the realtime data monitoring is proposed, in which a handoff mechanism is designed for adopting the nodes with minimal energy consumption rate to form the route. In addition, mobile hosts in a group may switch between different states of operations to conserve energy. To reduce the effect to the handoff mechanism, the doze period of nodes is set according to the node's attributes of distance and energy remaining. In the simulation experiments, we have shown that the amount of energy conserved from using DBRM is significantly larger than other two schemes.
