Cognitive Mechanism of Formulaic Language:A Construction Grammar Perspective
Li T · Journal of Xidian University · 2008
This paper attempts to explore the cognitive mechanism of formulaic language from the perspective of construction grammar.Structurally, formulaic language constitutes a continuum of constructions of symbolic units from morphemes to sentences;semantically, formulaic language is the conventionalized combination of sound and meaning,a result of schematization of human cognition;discoursally, formulaic language can fulfill such social functions as manipulating others and assertion identities. Finally, from the perspective of language acquisition and production, formulaic languages are holistically stored and retrieved from the learner’s memory, and function as shortcuts of language processing.
