Proximity measures in pattern recognition

The quantitative description of dissimilarity and similarity between patterns is a basic problem in pattern recognition.On the basis of exposition and discussion on the essence and mathematical definition of proximity,the typical proximity measures and their applications are summarized.Furthermore,the relation between proximity and attributes of pattern,and the important roles of the features of patterns and a priori knowledge are pointed out.
