Should I Recommend You? [MicroBusiness]

In the business world there is a long established tradition of making recommendations. However, there is some reluctance to provide recommendations. Most companies urge their managers not to do it. Their concern is that a manager may say or write something that will be perceived as negative. The former employee may conclude that the comments of their former employer prevented him or her from being offered a job at a prospective employer. Litigation may result. There are examples of ugly lawsuits with unpleasant outcomes. It hasn't discouraged the author from making recommendations, but he is thoughtful about how he does it. He concludes that he will continue to provide recommendations for very good performers. For less exceptional performers, he is comfortable making recommendations emphasizing their strengths and remaining silent on any shortcomings. If poor performers ask, he will decline to write or say anything.
