Performance Analysis of Data Compression Algorithms for Synthetic Aperture Radar

Lingli Tang · Modern Radar · 2009

The development of advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) with high resolutions and multiple imaging modes technologies causes a problem for spaceborne SAR. That is a large amount of data should be transmitted and processed. SAR raw data compression has become an important tool to reduce the huge amount of data for downlink. In this paper, the influences on the performances of data compression algorithms are analyzed in detail. Based on the real raw data of the high-resolution SAR,six compression algorithms for SAR raw data compression, such as BAQ,AP,and WT-AP are analyzed and compared. The compression results of different algorithms are compared in-depth in the raw data domain and image data domain respectively. The simulation results will be used for spaceborne SAR systems design.
