Understanding well logs and recognizing log facies are the primary challenges to oilfield development and usually influence later efforts.Using chaos theory,an analysis was performed on the characteristics of the attractors reconstructed by the well logs of oil-layer groups based on phase space reconstruction technique. An improved method for calculating the largest Lyapunov exponent for well logs is given. In the improved algorithm, the search field for the nearest neighbor is reduced, resulting in increased efficiency.Experiment results show that different oil-layer groups have a different maximum Lyapunov exponent, all greater than zero.
