A Registration and Management System for Consistently Interpreting Semantics of Sensor Information in Heterogeneous Sensor Network Environments

Dongwon Jeong, Jong-Jin Ji · 2011

This paper proposes a registration and management method to semantically interpret information of many types of sensors in heterogeneous sensor network environments. To realize an ideal ubiquitous computing environment, a device should be able to interpret and use information from any sensors independent of sensors or sensor networks. However, current systems consider only the restricted environment where information of sensors is predefined for using by devices. To resolve this issue, various approaches have been studied, but there still remain several problems to realize the ubiquitous computing environment. This paper proposes a new system model for achieving seamless semantic interoperability of the problems. The proposed system registers and manages information of heterogenous sensors, and the sensor information includes units of sensory data, types of sensors, information of producing companies, and so on. The concept of the proposed model is inherited from ISO/IEC 11179 - Metadata Registry. This paper also shows a prototype system with application scenarios and accomplishes a comparative evaluation against the previous. The proposed system is capable of the instant sensor data processing and enables sensor devices to use precise context information. It also supports an easy semantic information extensibility by providing a dynamic semantic management facility.
