An audio compression algorithm suitable for multimedia application

XU Qing-yuan · Journal of China Institute of Communications · 2003

An audio compression algorithm is presented, which based on the wavelet theory and the binary-plane adjustable threshold coding. It can provide a multi-rate compressed audio stream related to the changeable compression rate or SNR without considering the source audio characteristics and building the codebook. It can be used to compress any type of sound signals and especially suitable for network multimedia application. Good rebuilding stereo quality can be gained when it is compressed from 86kB/s to 16kB/s and more.
