H.264/MPEG-4 AVC introduces the multiple reference frame motion compensation to improve video coding performance. However, the resulted multiple reference frame motion estimation (MRF-ME) leads to much more computational cost. This paper presents a new method to speed up the matching process for multiple reference frames, called a fast hierarchical feature matching-motion estimation (HFM-ME) scheme. In the HFM-ME scheme, the sign truncated feature (STF) is defined and used for block matching. The block matching is then divided into mean matching and binary phase matching. Compared with the traditional block matching ME, the experimental results show that the proposed HFM-ME significantly reduces the CPU time while approximately keeps the similar performance.
