A cusp catastrophe model of key point's horizontal displacement and reduction coefficient is built by using the strength reduction finite element method to evaluate the slope stability. The analysis of example indicates that the mutability of slope failure process can be reflected when this model is employed as the slope failure criterion. The safety factor and potential slip surface obtained by this method is fairly close to the results gotten by traditional limit equilibrium Spencer method.Meanwhile, the method quantifies the failure criterion as a fixed value and the stability of the slope is evaluated by comparing the relationship between the value and zero.
