The Improved EGM for Computation of the Shielding Failure Rate on 500 kV Transmission Line

A typical lighting strike accident is introduced and the reasons of the incidences are discussed.The improved electrogeometrical model(EGM) is proposed and successfully explained some field accidents which can not be defined before by EGM.Also analyzed are the effect of tower structure,lightning current amplitude,angle of the lightning incidence,as well as the ground angle on the shielding failure rate.It is concluded that large lighting current can stride across lighting conductors to strike conductors under certain conditions in mountain areas.
