MPEG-4 Standard Based Motion Estimation Algorithm and Its Hardware Implementation Design

This paper provides a modified ME/MC algorithm which applies Diamond Search instead of Full Search to the Block Motion Vector Search. It reduces the searching pixel number and improves the searching speed. The hardware acceleration module in this paper adopts this algorithm. The hardware simulation module is planted into standard MPEG-4 validation software. The simulation results indicate that compared to traditional search algorithm, Modified 4MV search Algorithm reduces 50% computation without great loss in PSNR and average bit number. This new algorithm provides an important guide to motion estimation hardware module design.
