The heavy tamping method is an effective measure for the treatment of shallow ground collapsible loess. The original structure of soil is destroyed, the compressibility of soil is reduced and the bearing capacity of foundation is increased by the use of its strong impact,so as to achieve the purpose of collapsibility reduction. It is characterized by easier operation, lower cost and higher efficiency.Based on the application of heavy tamping method in treatment of collapsible loess of South-to-North Water Diversion Project,we present the operation principles, construction procedures, matters needing attention during construction, quality and safety control measures,as well as the application in foundation treatment of collapsible loess.
