Statins are the most widely used lipid-lowering drugs, which have an established role in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and the prophylactic treatment of patients with atherosclerotic disease.Much evidence has found that statins can prevent secondary cardiovascular events and thereby reduce morbidity and mortality.Statins can improve the outcomes of cardiovascular disease not only by their lipid-lowering function, but also by their functions such as improvement of endothelium function, antioxygenation, antiinflammatory, antiplatelet and stabilization of plaques, which are so called effects. We chose atorvastatin as a representative to review recent progresses in pleiotropic effects of statins.
