Research developments on maximum genus of graphs in graph embedding the- ory since 1971 were reviewed, including the following aspects: the relationships between maximum genus and other graph invariants such as connectivity, diameter, girth, chromatic number and z-factors; maximum genus and embedded graphs; and number of maximum genus embeddings.
