Based on the characteristic analysis of the linear frequency modulation(LFM) signal, a new kind of detector towards LFM signal was put forward, which was called Variance-of-Frequency-Modulation-Slope Detector(VFMSD). According to the probability density distribution of the variance-of-frequency-modulation-slope in different SNR, the detector’s binary hypothesis testing mode was indicated, and then the property of VFMSD and that of matching filter (MF) were compared in the same condition. The result shows that VFMSD is a kind of constant false alarm rate detector(CFAR detector), which can detect LFM signal effectively in low SNR, and can adapt to the Doppler mismatch very well.
