On the Syntactic Derivation of Ba-construction with Retained-objects

Tingting Huang · Journal of Hebei North University · 2011

Ba-construction with retained-objects refers to the Ba-construction that has a retained object after the main verb. This is a common but special type of Ba-construction which has rarely been systematically studied so far.On the analytical basis of the present researches and the problems concerning the other two types of retained-object construction, this paper points out that retained-object Ba-construction possesses a set of unique syntactic features and needs a separate grammatical explanation.Based on theories such as Unaccusative Hypothesis,Thematic Theory and Case Grammar, this paper further states that Ba-construction with retained-objects is a kind of two-argument non-ergative syntactic structure containing three arguments, provides a feasible explanation for the theta-role and case of the third argument, and finally puts forward a derivation model for this construction under the frame of the Minimalist Program.
