A gradient transfer contrast enhancement for underwater image

In the underwater laser imaging system,the image degradation tends to appear due to the scattering effects caused by sea environment.Based on the characteristics of the underwater image,an adaptive algorithm was proposed for enhancing the contrast through changing the image gradient.The algorithm includes three steps to transform an original image into a perfect one.First,the bilateral filter is applied to eliminating noise from the original image.Secondly,the image gradient is processed according to the local gray level in the image.Finally,the obtained gradient image is reverted to the gray image by solving Poisson′s equation.The experiments show that the algorithm can effectively improve the contrast of underwater image.
