MPEG-4 and Multimedia Communication

MPEG 4 aims at providing standardized core technologies allowing efficient storage,transmission and manipulation of AV data in multimedia environments.In other words,it aims at providing a common solution to tomorrow′s MPEG 4 terminal.It is not just a compression technology but it brings forward a brand new conception of data expression,that is,object oriented data expression.The foundation of the MPEG 4 standard will bring multimedia communication into real application.This paper gives an overview of basic principles and main characteristics of MPEG 4,emphatically introduces its video standard and explains its application to multimedia communication and its prospect.
