Application of Patterns of Thematic Progression to Literary Text Analysis

Patterns of thematic progression(TP) are important devices to construct literary texts.Patterns of TP are more complicated in literary texts than in other types of texts,and in most cases several patterns of TP are combined to produce a literary text,among which TP with a constant theme,TP with derived themes,TP with a split rheme and simple linear TP are the most frequently employed ones.Patterns of TP play an important role both in writers' construction of and in readers' analysis of literary texts.Super-theme is introduced in this paper so that literary text analysis based on patterns of TP can be conducted at a higher level.
