Block-Matching Criterion Based on DCT Coefficients Distribution

The time redundancy in video sequences can be eliminated by motion estimation. Block matching is a popular motion estimation method, adopted by all video codec standards. In this paper, we propose a matching criterion for block-matching motion estimation based on the statistic distribution of DCT AC coefficients. This criterion is insensible to luminance change. Experiments show that VOD can give better image quality than SAD, especially for frames whose luminance changes.
