Broadcast is an important issue in wireless ad hoc networks. This paper proposes a distributed broadcast algorithm based on the primary-secondary dominator concept for wireless ad hoc networks,in which each node partitions its selected neighbor dominators into primary and secondary dominator set according to its local topology, only those nodes in the primary dominator set will forward the broadcast packet, secondary dominators are responsible for surveillance of the network coverage condition. If there exist some neighbor nodes that could not be covered by the primary dominators, the corresponding secondary dominators will become primary dominators automatically and forward the broadcast packet.By this way the algorithm not only guarantees the full coverage of the network, but also reduces the number of forward nodes and improves the broadcast efficiency dramatically. This paper also proposes a self-pruning rule to optimize the broadcast algorithm, which does not influence the full coverage of the network, but further eliminates some redundant forward nodes and enhances the performance of the broadcast algorithm. The authors prove the correctness and effectiveness of the algorithm by theoretic analysis and compare its performance by simulation, which shows it is better than other broadcast algorithms.
