A method of forward wavelet transform and inverse wavelet transform for medical ultrasound images is introduced, which is based on the components of 2D image, and after forward wavelet transformed, 2D Grouping Huffman Coding is used. The errors of the compression algorithm based on wavelet analysis are discussed, and corresponding measures to improve the compression algorithm are also presented. The authors use normalized correlation coefficient between reconstructed image and original image to evaluate the quality of the reconstructed image. The result shows that the grouping Huffman coding improves the compression ratio of ultrasound images, which the qualities of the reconstructed ultrasound images are assured.
