A Construction Grammar Approach to Chinese Word Classes

Based on the framework of Construction Grammar,this paper proposes that the word class in Chinese language is the result of categorization of words in the construction.The word in the substantive construction is categorized into the half-Abstract word class through comparison with similar words and constructions,which is further categorized into the Abstract word class based on its structure and meaning.Entities are varied while grammar structures are limited;therefore,it is very common in the language that the same word occurs with various constructions,which may result in word class variations.The Construction Grammar approach can be used to solve thorny problems in the traditional grammar,including the differentiation of Chinese word classes and the description and explanation of word class variations.
