The so-called blocking effect of is examined from the functional point of view, and the formalist explanation is proved to be untenable. The factor involved in the observed blocking effect of dou is the status of information: non-focus constituents can appear between dou and its target; but constituents that express focus information will block the quantification of dou. Therefore, can be regarded as a natural boundary between the non-focus information that precedes it and the focus information that follows it in a sentence.
