Direction Tendency Analysis on Chinese Derogatory and Commendatory Words

This paper makes a tentative analysis on the derogatory and commendatory (DC) direction tendency of Chinese DC words. The DC direction tendency of 992 words (including nouns,verbs,adjectives and adverbs) is analyzed under the framework of syntax component,valence,semantic roles and the trigram of 〈holder—attitude—object〉,with special focus on the distinction in direction tendency between the speaker's attitude towards the agent and the agent's attitude towards the patient for the two-valence words. The findings can be applied in the semantic computation in sentence or discourse,in the choice of words in machine translation,and in areas such as language teaching and dictionary compilation.
