Symbol Segmentation for Printed Mathematical Expressions Based on Combined Strategies

Symbol segmentation is a crucial stage in mathematical expression recognition.Based on the conclusion of layout feature of formula symbols,an approach of formula symbol segmentation using combined strategies is put forward.In this method,the contained symbols are segmented,while the symbols which consist of several connected components are merged.The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can obtain favorable results.
