In this paper,we report that the animal teratogens, vitamin A and cadmium sulfate, have positive results, while the animal nonteratogen vitamin C has a negative result in the Chinese hamster V79 cell metabolic cooperation assay. The reliability study for predicting teratogenicity indicates that the sensitivity and specificity of the V79 cell metabolic cooperation assay for predicting teratogenicity are 0.75 and 0.62 respectively. This assay is useful to predict theteratogens which action mechanism shows an inhibitory effect on the gap junctional intercellular communication and can be recommended as an important supplementary test in the optimal short-term test group for predicting teratogens.
