Design of Improved S-MAC protocol in Sensor Networks

Zheng Hong · Journal of Military Communications Technology · 2005

In sensor networks battery-operated sensors collaborate for a common application, and sensors are expected to last until their energy drains.S-MAC,presently the most widely used energy efficient medium access control protocol in sensor networks, has a border-node problem which shortens the lifetime of the network as a whole.Improvement was made on S-MAC and a broadcast method was proposed to achieve global schedule synchronization and solve the border-node problem. The simulation results show the improved protocol is more advantageous in prolonging network lifetime.
