ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUBTROPICAL HIGH ACTIVITY AND WAVE-PACKETS PROPAGATION CHARACTERISTICS

Ronghua Jin · Journal of Tropical Meteorology · 2010

Using the daily NCEP/NCAR reanalysis dataset from May to August 1998 and the method of Wave-packet Propagation Diagnosis(WPD),this paper discusses the relationship between the subtropical high activity and Transient Wave-Packets(TWP) characteristics. The results show that this method is basically workable. An area of strong TWP propagating northward and southward in low latitudes during the summer of 1998 can describe the latitudinal fluctuation of the subtropical high ridge(SHR) while the weakly TWP region propagating eastward and westward can show the longitudinal fluctuation of the SHR.The northward jump of WPSH is connected with not only the abrupt development and northward propagation of the wave-packets,but also the mid-latitude wave-packets propagating northward and eastward. However, the subtropical high ridge retreating from the north is connected with the wave-packets propagating southward and dissipating.
