Design and analysis of a dual-channel based local area network (dc-lan) for voice/data integration

This dissertation studies various aspects of integrated voice/data transmission on Local Area Network (LAN). The problems of employing the prevalent LAN schemes to carry both voice and data traffic are examined and analyzed. To overcome these problems, the Dual-Channel Based LAN(DC-LAN) architecture and the associated protocol are developed. Three variations of this protocol, i.e., the nonpersistent DC-LAN, the 1-persistent DC-LAN, and the prioritized 1-persistent DC-LAN protocol are defined, and their performance is studied through analytical modeling and computer simulation. Both the nonpersistent and 1-persistent DC-LAN protocol demonstrate superior throughput performance when compared to that of the Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) protocol. The prioritized 1-persistent DC-LAN protocol exhibits high channel throughput and bounded voice packet delay attribute which are suitable for integrated voice/data transmission.
