Perceptual training of Japanese students to discriminate Mandarin Tones 2 and 3

Wen Cao · Journal of Tsinghua University(Science and Technology) · 2013

This paper describes a perceptual training scheme to help Japanese students discriminate Mandarin Tones 2 and 3 with a two-day long adaptive training course and a 4-day long high variability phonetic training course. This study investigates the interactions for syllabic structures in the two training courses.Analyses of the training results suggest that the training stimuli can be classified into four groups, with each group of stimuli tending to have different effects in the two perceptual training courses.Understanding of these interactions will enable development of more efficient syllabic structure dependent training methods.
