Heat Transfer Characteristics of Large-sized Materials Under Different Heating Modes

Chunyuan Ma · Journal of Power Engineering · 2009

Taking straw bales as an object of study, heating experiments by both microwave and electrical method were carried out, during which temperature distribution within the bale were measured and compared between the two heating modes. Results show that by microwave method, quick and uniform heating effect can be obtained, but the temperature distribution is deeply influenced by both the material property and the chemical reaction during the heating up process.Whereas, the temperature distribution reduces monotonously in the direction of heat conduction under the electrical heating conditions, which attributes to the thermal resistance of the material leading to the temperature gradient among different layers of straw, and the time interval for each layer to get into thermal decomposition is more and more enlarged along the heat conduction direction. Therefore under same power conditions and compared with the electrical heating method, the microwave heating is quicker and more efficient.
